London City Lionesses taking things day-by-day as calls for ‘national lockdown’ intensify

The London City Lionesses are taking things day-by-day when it comes to the ever-changing situation surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic according to caretaker boss Melissa Phillips.

The UK Government implemented a new three-tier system to combat rising infections from the virus at midnight and while elite sport can continue for the time being, there are increasing calls for a ‘national lockdown’ or ‘circuit-breaker’.

Following this weekend’s round of fixtures in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship, the season goes into a short international break and it is uncertain whether domestic fixtures will be in a position to recommence following that two-week interval.

Speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time this morning, London City Lionesses caretaker Phillips admitted that the club will be taking things day-by-day when it comes to Covid-19.

“We will take things day-by-day and receive advice from The FA on best practice” said Phillips. “The most important thing that we can do is run a tight ship in-house and that we protect our players and protect our bubble, so we do a lot of education when they are in the facility and away from us at their homes and that is what we will continue to do.

“I think event of a lockdown, it would be in the interest of the health and safety of the entire nation and there are plenty of things that we can do on a tactical and team culture standpoint on Zoom calls to make sure that we don’t skip a beat.”

Any enforced break would certainly come at a bad time for The Pride after they collected their first win of the season against London Bees at Princes Park on Sunday. Despite all eyes being on the UK Government following a big week in political world, London City Lionesses are focussing fully on what they will see as another winnable fixture at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. Gemma Donnelly has built a talented young side at the Lancashire club and London City Lionesses will need to be well-prepared if they are to make it back-to-back wins in the FA Women’s Championship this weekend.

Ahead of Sunday’s fixture at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium, caretaker boss Phillips said “I think we just have to take some of the lessons that we learnt in the last match into this match.

“It is always going to be about week-to-week and which players are stepping up ahead of the game, that’s exactly what we saw in the Bees match.

“There was a discipline to what we were trying to do, you are not always rewarded for what you are trying to do so I am really pleased for the players that they were rewarded for some of their pieces of play that we had been working on throughout the week.”

London City Lionesses’ fixture at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday is scheduled to kick-off at 2pm with highlights available on the FA Player.
