Sheffield United duo handed recalls to Northern Ireland squad

Sheffield United pair Becky Flaherty and Nat Johnson have been handed recalls to the Northern Ireland squad for the nation’s upcoming UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifier against Belarus later this month.

Kenny Shiels’ side take on Belarus at the Dinamo National Olympic Stadium in Minsk on Tuesday 27 October with Northern Ireland very much needing a positive result to keep their UEFA Women’s EURO qualification hopes alive.

The Northern Irish Football Association have this morning announced Shiels’ 21-player squad for the fixture via their official website with Sheffield United pair Flaherty and Johnson earning recalls. The pair appear in the Northern Ireland squad alongside four other players from both the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship.

Goalkeeper Flaherty has collected three senior caps so far with the player having made her debut in a 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan in 2019. The 22-year-old has recently been out of the international fold due to a hip injury sustained earlier this year.

Flaherty is joined in the Northern Ireland squad by her club teammate Johnson who was last capped more than 18 months ago. The player has previously been called up by manager Shiels for UEFA Women’s EURO qualifying duty but she is yet to make an appearance after being left unused on the bench.

Flaherty and Johnson are joined in the squad by English-based quartet Rachel Furness (Liverpool), Sarah Robson (Durham), Chloe McCarron (Birmingham City) and Simone Magill (Everton).
