Chelsea forward made to wait to equal Danish goal record

Chelsea forward Pernille Harder will have to wait a little longer to equal Merete Pedersen’s goalscoring record for Denmark after failing to score against Italy in Empoli this evening.

The 27-year-old goal machine netted two goals against Isreal last Wednesday to move her to within one goal of Pedersen’s all-time record goal tally of 65 for Denmark but she failed to find the back of the net this evening as the Danes defeated Italy 3-1.

Harder captained Denmark at the Stadio Carlo Castellani as Lars Sondergaard’s side looked to record a victory which would secure their place at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. She played the full 90 minutes but was unable to get her name on the scoresheet to equal Danish legend Pedersen’s record.

Italian goalkeeper Laura Giuliani’s own goal gave Denmark a sixth-minute lead in Empoli before Nadia Nadim’s strike made it 2-0 with just 17 minutes on the clock, Harder creating the chance for the Paris Saint-Germain forward.

Nadim’s second goal of the game early in the second period gave Denmark a three-goal lead before Valentina Giacinti’s effort on the hour reduced the arrears for the hosts.

There were no further goals from either side during the last 30 minutes as Denmark successfully saw the game out to book their ticket to England.
