West Ham United midfielder Katerina Svitkova was reinstated to the Czech Republic starting line-up as the nation defeated Azerbaijan 3-0 in their latest UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifying match this evening.
The three-time Czech Player of the Year was only a substitute as Karel Rada’s side lost 4-0 in Spain on Friday evening but she found herself back in the starting XI for this evening’s match in Chomutov.
Svitkova went on to play the opening 72 minutes of the match against Azerbaijan, collecting her 35th senior international cap in the process.
Klara Cahynova’s 27th-minute goal gave the Czech Republic the lead against group minnows Azerbaijan. Rada’s side added further goals in the second half through Tereza Krejcirikova and Tereza Szewieczkova as the Czechs kept their UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 dreams alive going into their final fixture against Moldova in December.
Despite having featured for the Czech Republic for the last six years, West Ham United midfielder Svitkova is yet to represent her country in a major tournament finals. The nation are currently in 29th place in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings but have never qualified for a UEFA Women’s EURO or FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Czechs will be hoping to make history by qualifying for England 2022, although the lottery of the play-offs now hold their only hope.
