Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor has highlighted the impact that United States international midfielder Sam Mewis has made at the club so far this season.
The 28-year-old was on target for her side this afternoon, scoring the first goal in Manchester City’s 3-1 Vitality Women’s FA Cup final victory over Everton at Wembley.
Mewis towered above every player in the Everton box to head home from Alex Greenwood’s corner kick. It was a driving performance from the midfielder who was at the heart of many of Manchester City’s attacking moves.
When speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time in the post-match press conference, Manchester City boss Taylor highlighted the huge impact that Mewis has already made at the club.
“She is a huge player for us” he said. “Sometimes when you are in the throws of the season, you don’t get time to reflect on the impact that she has had.
“She is top, top class, not just in her performances but in the way that she conducts herself as well.
“When I was watching videos of her and going through recruitment meetings I was saying that this player seems such a team player.
“That is the main thing that you look for. If you have got someone who is there for the team, you know that they are going to drive players along with them.
“The effect that she has had on young players like Jess Park has been amazing.”
Mewis was unable to help Manchester City to Wembley success on her debut in the FA Women’s Community Shield in August and therefore has won her first piece of silverware in England this afternoon. Her manager went on to say that the club now have their eyes focused upon the pursuit of other trophies this season.
Taylor said “This (winning the Vitality Women’s FA Cup) just reinforces the message.
“We want to achieve big things, we want to make history, we want to challenge the players to win the FA Cup twice in one season.
“I expect us to compete. City have a reputation, we fight to the end.
“We will fight in all of these competitions and draw on the resources of the squad that we have.
“This gives us a platform to build on, to get a trophy under your belt in the second month of the season is great.”
Manchester City continue their pursuit of their next trophy on Wednesday afternoon when they face Liverpool at Prenton Park in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup. Victory would move Taylor’s side into an exceptionally strong position in their group.
