PREVIEW: Coventry United v Aston Villa

Coventry United and Aston Villa will go head-to-head on Tuesday evening when the pair meet in the group stage of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup at the Butts Park Arena.

The original fixture was set to be staged last week but was postponed on safety grounds following positive COVID-19 tests in the home camp.

Both teams returned to action following lengthy absences at the weekend. Coventry United fell to a 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace in the FA Women’s Championship while Aston Villa collected their first three points as a Barclays FA Women’s Super League club, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at The People’s Pension Stadium in Crawley.

Coventry United went down fighting in their first FA Women’s Continental League Cup group match at Durham last month. Jay Bradford’s side took the lead in the North East before eventually going down 5-2. Aston Villa started their campaign with a 1-0 victory over their former promotion rivals Sheffield United at The Banks’s Stadium, Jodie Hutton’s penalty kick proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Aston Villa completed a league double over Coventry United last season but it was the Warwickshire side who collected a bonus point in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup courtesy of a 3-1 penalty shootout success. On that occasion, the scoreline was level at 2-2 after 90 minutes as both sides couldn’t be separated at the Butts Park Arena.

Tuesday evening’s meeting between Coventry United and Aston Villa will kick-off at 7.45pm with the match available to stream live on CUTV.
