Improving London City Lionesses can climb the table says Fitzgerald

London City Lionesses midfielder Lucy Fitzgerald believes that The Pride have enough quality and belief in their ranks to continue to climb the FA Women’s Championship table.

After failing to win any of their first four matches in this season’s FA Women’s Championship, Melissa Phillips’ side have recorded two wins from their last three games, including an excellent 4-1 success against promotion-chasing Leicester City last time out.

Speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time in London City Lionesses’ weekly press conference, Fitzgerald said that The Pride have enough quality and belief in the group to continue to climb the FA Women’s Championship table.

“As a team, we are improving every single day both on the training pitch and in games” said the midfielder. “We have had a challenging start with new players coming in and changes being made but we are just going to keep improving throughout the season.

“If we keep performing like we have in the last few weeks, I think that we will keep climbing the table and really push as high as we can.

“We’ve got belief in the squad that we can get much higher in the table than we are at the moment.”

Fitzgerald was a 61st-minute substitute in the victory over Leicester City, coming off the bench with her side leading 2-1. The player highlighted the effective game management implemented by her side as they went on to extend their lead and take their second maximum points return of the season.

She said “It was about game management as a team, we tried to defend really solidly and when we got the chance to counter, we did it the best we could and it worked.

“Once we went 4-1 up, we just managed the game to see it out and to not concede any more goals.

“We all worked together and put our bodies on the line.”

Fitzgerald is yet to complete a full 90 minutes for London City Lionesses in the FA Women’s Championship this season but she is eager to continue to take any opportunities which come her way as she looks to increase her game time.

“The squad depth has really increased this year, we have recruited some really good players” the teenager admitted. “The team is coming together as a whole.

“If I just keep working hard in training and try to perform to my best in games when given the opportunity then that’s all I can do to try and play as much as I can and complete as many 90 minutes as I can.”

Fitzgerald will be hoping for another opportunity to impress head coach Phillips when London City Lionesses travel to The Oakwood to take on Charlton Athletic on Sunday.
