Spurs defender caps-off special week with maiden senior call-up for Wales

Young Tottenham Hotspur defender Esther Morgan has capped-off a special week on a personal level with her first senior international call-up to Jayne Ludlow’s Welsh squad.

The youngster has been training with the Spurs first team and was named in the senior side’s matchday squad for the first time last weekend.

Morgan was an unused substitute as the North Londoners drew 2-2 with Bristol City at Twerton Park in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League while she again made the bench for the North London derby at Arsenal in midweek in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.

On the international stage, Morgan has captained Wales’ Under-19 side after successfully negotiating her way through the various youth levels.

Welsh boss Ludlow named her squad for the upcoming UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifier against Belarus this morning with Spurs defender Morgan being handed her first senior call-up. Wales face Belarus at Rodney Parade in Newport on Tuesday 1 December as they look to confirm their place in the play-offs.

The Welsh squad is dominated by players who are playing their football in either the Barclays FA Women’s Super League or FA Women’s Championship. Of the 26 players selected, 19 of those are English-based. Reading are again the most well-represented club with five members of Kelly Chambers’ squad receiving international call-ups.
