There hasn’t been all that much to cheer about at Barclays FA Women’s Super League club Tottenham Hotspur so far this season but one player is enjoying an impressive campaign despite the team’s struggles.
Defender Siri Worm has provided important contributions at both ends of the pitch so far this season and she can undoubtedly play a key role in turning Spurs’ form around under new head coach Rehanne Skinner.
Worm has started five of Spurs’ seven Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches so far this season, while she has been a substitute in another. When the defender has been on the pitch, the North Londoners have conceded one goal in every 48.3 minutes of Barclays FA Women’s Super League football compared to a goal every 24.5 minutes when the player has been occupying a space on the bench.
Creatively, it is unsurprising to see the assists table populated by players from the top four or five clubs in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. One exception to that rule is Worm who has provided three assists in less than five-and-a-half games, that record is the joint-second best in the entire league behind Arsenal trio Caitlin Foord, Katie McCabe and Beth Mead who have all created five goals. Worm most recently scored one goal and created another in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Bristol City.
In terms of Spurs’ individual team stats, Worm has won more aerial duels than any of her defensive teammates (11) while only Ria Percival has won more tackles than the Dutch international’s tally of eight within the team’s defensive unit. Ashleigh Neville is the only player in the Spurs squad to have attempted more tackles than Worm this season.
Offensively, Worm has delivered 18 crosses, that’s more than double the next best total in the Spurs team. The defender also leads the way in terms of goal attempts which she has created for her colleagues (11) from dead ball situations while only teammate Neville has created more shooting opportunities for the team from live ball situations than Worm.
Worm completed a full 90 minutes on just two occasions for Spurs last term but the player is really beginning to prove her worth to the club this season. New head coach Skinner will know that she is inheriting a reliable player in Worm and she deserves to be one of the first names on her new boss’ team sheet in the coming weeks.
