Chelsea’s Jessie Fleming, Manchester City’s Janine Beckie and Shelina Zadorsky of Tottenham Hotspur have made the shortlist for Canada Soccer’s Women’s Player of the Year award for 2020.
Canada Soccer announced their 13-player shortlist via their official website in the early hours of this morning with the three Barclays FA Women’s Super League stars making an appearance.
Midfielder Fleming has largely been used as a substitute for new club Chelsea so far this season, however, she has been instrumental for her country. The 22-year-old helped Canada to secure qualification for the Olympic Games while she has featured in seven of her nation’s nine matches throughout the calendar year.
Manchester City forward Beckie has been a dependable figure for her club, being utilised in different positions and showing great adaptability. She featured in 14 of City’s 16 league matches last season while Beckie has played in five Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures so far this term. She was a 2019/2020 Vitality Women’s FA Cup winner with City earlier this month. In seven appearances for her country in 2020, Beckie has scored four goals including a hat-trick against Jamaica in February.
After joining Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, defender Zadorsky has played a key role for the North Londoners, featuring in six of their seven Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures so far this season. The player scored her only goal in Spurs’ 2-2 North London derby at Arsenal last week and has played in all three tournament matches for her club. Like fellow English-based stars Fleming and Beckie, Zadorsky has made seven appearances for her country in the current calendar year and has played an important role in their success.
The winner of the Canada Soccer Women’s Player of the Year award for 2020 will be announced in due course.
