Former Chelsea forward scores for Portugal as they send Scotland to damaging defeat

Former Chelsea forward Ana Borges netted the only goal as Portugal defeated Scotland 1-0 in Lisbon this evening in a UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifier.

The 30-year-old struck from close range in the second half to leave Scotland four points adrift of the play-offs with just three games left to play.

Scotland had plenty of the ball throughout and arguably had the better chances but it was Portugal who took their big opportunity with Borges keeping her cool to fire home from close range after beating the offside flag in the 69th minute. The ball was lofted over the top of the visiting defence and the former Chelsea forward was left with time and space to control and place it in the back of the net despite the best efforts of Scotland goalkeeper Lee Alexander.

Borges is no stranger to a number of the Scotland players who have played their football in England in recent years. The experienced forward spent three years as a Chelsea player between 2014 and 2017 and helped the club to an SSE Women’s FA Cup and FA Women’s Super League 1 double in 2015. Those trophy successes were Chelsea’s first honours as a full-time professional club.

The player ended her English footballing adventure by returning to her homeland where she joined Sporting Lisbon on a loan deal which was later made permanent.
