Chelsea defender nets first international goal in Swedish victory over Slovakia

Chelsea defender Jonna Andersson netted her first international goal for Sweden as they defeated Slovakia 6-0 in Trnava this evening in their final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 qualifier.

The 27-year-old Mjolby-born defender struck in the second half for the Swedes on what was her 53rd appearance for her country at senior level.

Sweden took the lead in the 22nd minute through Filippa Angeldal before further first half goals from Linda Sembrant and Fridolina Rolfo gave Peter Gerhardsson’s side a three-goal advantage going into the break.

The fourth goal of the game came four minutes into the second half through an unusual source. Chelsea defender Andersson had played 52 matches without scoring a goal for Sweden but it was 53rd time lucky for the left-back as she finally got off the mark.

Rebecka Blomqvist soon netted Sweden’s fifth goal before Angeldal completed the scoring with her second goal of the game 17 minutes from time.

Sweden top their qualifying group and will head to England in summer 2022 in search of their first UEFA Women’s EURO title since the tournament began in 1984. In 10 tournament appearances, the Swedes have been finalists or better on four occasions while they have made the semi-finals in eight of those tournament appearances.
