Kerr hits hat-trick as Chelsea see off West Ham United

Sam Kerr hit her first Chelsea hat-trick as The Blues defeated a spirited West Ham United side 3-2 at Kingsmeadow this afternoon.

The manageress visitors gave it their all on what was a slightly nervy afternoon for reigning Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions Chelsea who welcomed back 700 supporters to Kingsmeadow.

Kerr opened the scoring for the hosts after 15 minutes when she tapped home a cross from returning forward Fran Kirby and the scoreline remained at 1-0 for the rest of the half.

Rachel Daly struck a surprise equaliser for West Ham United soon after the break as the East Londoners got a foothold back on the game.

Kerr soon got Chelsea going again following that setback though. She netted her second goal of the game with another clinical finish before the Australian international made it 3-1 to The Blues 13 minutes later, striking the ball home from just a few yards.

Magda Eriksson netted an own goal two minutes from time to set up a cagey finale but Chelsea held on as they continue to apply pressure to Arsenal and Manchester United in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title race. Emma Hayes’ side remain in third place, two points adrift of Arsenal and three points behind Manchester United but The Blues have a game in hand on their title rivals.
