Leicester City top the FA Women’s Championship after victory over London Bees

Leicester City have moved to the top of the FA Women’s Championship after beating London Bees 3-0 in cold conditions at Farley Way this afternoon.

Natasha Flint, Paige Bailey-Gayle and Millie Farrow scored the goals as Jonathan Morgan’s side took advantage of Durham’s slip up earlier in the day to climb to the league summit.

Leicester City took the lead after 11 minutes with the first shot of the game. Flint found space just inside the area and curled a shot into the far corner of Sarah Quantrill’s net.

The visitors remained in the match largely due to them matching the hosts’ tempo but they began to come under some pressure towards the end of the first half. Bailey-Gayle and Lachante Paul fired shots wide before Flint found the ball at her feet from an Esmee de Graaf cross but couldn’t get clean contact. Bailey-Gayle then saw an effort pushed to safety by Quantrill before Remi Allen and Ashleigh Plumptre sent attempts wide of the target as the half ended 1-0.

Leicester City were unlucky not to be 2-0 up five minutes into the second half when Qunatrill tipped Charlie Devlin’s venomous effort over before Paul struck a shot straight at The Bees keeper when in a great position to score.

The second goal did arrive 11 minutes into the half via an ever-reliable source. Bailey-Gayle struck a shot from the edge of the box and the ball nestled in the bottom corner of the net.

London Bees should have immediately been back in the game when the ball found Brooke Nunn at the back post but it bounced wide off her knee before Melisa Filis beat home keeper Kirstie Levell to the ball but Sam Tierney was there to clear the danger.

The visitors were left to rue those missed chances when Leicester City netted their third goal. Paul’s shot was blocked but the ball eventually found substitute Farrow unmarked at the back post and she headed into an unguarded net.

Farrow then fired a shot wide before Plumptre headed an effort off target at the death as The Foxes were unable to find a fourth goal but it didn’t matter with Morgan’s side collecting the three points needed to send them to the top of the table.
