A place in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup quarter-finals is on the line at the SportNation.bet Stadium this afternoon as Midlands rivals Birmingham City and Leicester City contest their final group match.
Leicester City currently top the group on goal difference and will qualify for the last eight should they avoid defeat either in normal time or in a penalty shootout. Birmingham City’s task is therefore simple, they must defeat The Foxes by either method. A draw would see the Blues exit the competition as their goal difference is less than those other sides who have collected two points-per-game and are competing for the second best runners-up spot.
Birmingham City boss Carla Ward was able to name 15 players in her matchday squad for the trip to Arsenal on Sunday. The club’s injury list is beginning to ease a little, however, midfielder Sarah Mayling and forward Abbi Grant remain sidelined while youngster Lily Simkin is not yet fit to feature.
Leicester City travel to Solihull on the back of a routine 3-0 home victory over London Bees on Sunday. Manager Jonathan Morgan had the opportunity to rotate and rest some players during the second half at Farley Way. Defender Esmee de Graaf seemed to pick up a knock during the second half and may be assessed ahead of the trip to the SportNation.bet Stadium while The Foxes remain without goalkeeper Demi Lambourne and forward Hannah Cain.
The FA Women’s Continental League Cup group fixture between Birmingham City and Leicester City takes place at the SportNation.bet Stadium this afternoon and will kick-off at 2pm. Fans can stream the game live via Birmingham City Women’s official Facebook page.
