Powell looking to avoid Brighton & Hove Albion panic buys in January

Brighton & Hove Albion will not be drawn into panic buying in the January transfer window but will bring in new faces if they are likely to take the club onto the next level according to manager Hope Powell.

The Seagulls currently find themselves in a congested bottom half of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table and the club will be keen to ensure that they are looking up rather than down in 2021.

January offers manager Powell the opportunity to grow and improve her squad but when speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time, she explained that the club will only bring in new players if they are a good fit.

“The January window is always a difficult one” said the Albion boss. “Quite often there is a bit of panic, just because there is a window, you’ve got to bring somebody in.

“I am trying to be quite strategic. We are looking and if we feel that there is a specific target and we feel that we can get those players then of course.

“If it strengthens the squad we will do that, if it doesn’t then there’s no point.”

A hectic run of December fixtures followed by the festive period is likely to leave Powell with little time to analyse transfers, however, she went on to highlight the fact that she has some great support at the club assisting her when it comes to recruitment.

She added “We are very fortunate, we brought in somebody to solely focus on recruitment so that takes a lot of pressure off me.

“We are looking all the time. We are looking at this window, looking at the next window and looking at the window after that.

“We are continuously looking and I think that we are in a really good position with someone now able to do that full-time.”

Brighton & Hove Albion will hope to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat at Tottenham Hotspur when they host Chelsea on Sunday. The Seagulls sign-off 2020 with another home fixture against Reading next weekend.
