Brighton & Hove Albion boss Powell hoping for repeat of Chelsea performance against Reading

Brighton & Hove Albion boss Hope Powell is hoping to see her side replicate their performance against Chelsea last weekend when they host Reading at The People’s Pension Stadium on Sunday.

The Seagulls lost 1-0 to the champions last weekend but performed heroically and again proved that they can push one of the elite sides in the league right until the final whistle.

Sunday’s fixture against Reading will provide Brighton & Hove Albion with the opportunity to leapfrog their opponents while they could even end the year in the top half of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table. When speaking in the club’s pre-match press conference, in which FA Women’s Super League Full-Time were present, Powell said that matching last weekend’s performance levels will give her side a great chance of three points on Sunday.

“We want to go into the New Year securing three points but we know how difficult that will be” said Powell. “Technically, Reading are very good and their movement is very good.

“There is a lot to contend with and we will have to be at our best to get something out of the game.

“If we perform how we performed against Chelsea, we will give ourselves the best possible chance.”

Reading defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 in last month’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup meeting at The People’s Pension Stadium but Powell believes that the result from that game is not on her side’s minds ahead of their latest match.

She added “You move on very quickly, we have had games in-between, we just move on to the game on Sunday in the league.

“It will be a very different game with different personnel for them and different personnel for us.

“As I have said, if we perform the way that we did against Chelsea, we will give ourselves the very best chance.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading is scheduled to kick-off 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon and will be available to watch live on BT Sport 1.
