Durham and Liverpool will contest one of the biggest matches of the FA Women’s Championship season to date when the pair meet at Maiden Castle this lunchtime.
The hosts currently hold a one-point lead over Vicky Jepson’s side, however, both sides trail league leaders Leicester City, meaning that this afternoon’s fixture holds huge importance in the battle to secure Barclays FA Women’s Super League football next season.
Durham will be hoping to rediscover their form from earlier in the season with The Wildcats having wobbled slightly in recent weeks. Lee Sanders’ side have failed to win either of their last two home league matches while they were 3-1 down at lowly Coventry United last weekend before showing some great character in the second half to come back and win 4-3.
Sanders is again set to be without long-term absentees Iris Achterhof and Abby Holmes but defender Becky Salicki is in contention for a start after coming off the bench at Coventry United last weekend to feature for the first time since mid-October.
Liverpool manager Jepson is thought to have no new injury concerns ahead of her side’s trip to the North East. The Reds recorded an excellent 1-0 victory at London City Lionesses last weekend and could line-up in a similar form at Maiden Castle this afternoon.
Durham were Liverpool’s first-ever FA Women’s Championship opponents. The two sides met at Prenton Park on opening day, battling out a 1-1 draw. Rachel Furness gave Liverpool a first half lead but Beth Hepple levelled matters late in the game despite Durham having been reduced to 10-players through the serious injury of forward Achterhof.
