Everton’s FAWSL fixture against Manchester United becomes fourth weekend postponement

Sunday’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Everton and Manchester United has become the fourth elite women’s fixture to be postponed.

Two fixtures in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League were postponed on Thursday while one FA Women’s Championship fixture was called off earlier today. All three games have been postponed largely due to COVID-19 factors.

Everton have released a club statement via their official club website this evening confirming that their fixture against Manchester United has become this weekend’s fourth casualty due to a combination of COVID-19 and injuries. Five members of the squad tested positive for COVID-19 during the final week of 2020 and would have been unfit to play this weekend which when combined with Everton’s lengthy injury list means that The Blue Girls would have had just 13 fit players to take on United.

Manchester City’s fixture against West Ham United was the first game of the weekend to be postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests and ‘other mitigating factors’ before the cancellation of Aston Villa’s home clash against Arsenal soon followed with The Gunners also battling virus issues. Charlton Athletic’s FA Women’s Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers is also off with members of The Addicks squad having tested positive for COVID-19.

A new date for Everton’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United will be agreed between the two clubs in due course.
