Durham have dropped points in the FA Women’s Championship title race after being held to a 1-1 draw by Lewes at The Dripping Pan this afternoon.
Bridget Galloway prodded Durham into an early lead but Katie Rood levelled matters for the hosts from the penalty spot in the second half in freezing conditions in Sussex.
In a game of few decent goalscoring opportunities, Durham took the lead after seven minutes when the ball was fumbled by home keeper Tatiana Saunders following a corner kick delivery and Galloway prodded home on the goal-line.
Neither side’s goalkeeper was really troubled in the remainder of the first half with Beth Hepple’s effort from 25 yards being the best goalscoring opportunity, although the ball landed comfortably in the arms of Saunders.
Lewes levelled matters nine minutes into second half when Lauren Briggs was adjudged to have caught Katie Rood in the box. The New Zealand international took the penalty kick herself and sent visiting keeper Megan Borthwick the wrong way as she slotted the ball home.
Set pieces looked to provide Durham with their best opportunities to regain the lead but captain Sarah Wilson couldn’t trouble the Lewes goal on a couple of occasions as the scoreline remained at 1-1.
The point collected in Sussex temporarily moves Durham level on points with league leaders Leicester City who take on promotion rivals Sheffield United at Farley Way this afternoon.
