Manchester City midfielder Mewis excited to continue partnership with Dahlkemper

United States international midfielder Sam Mewis says that she is excited to be able to continue her partnership with close friend Abby Dahlkemper at Manchester City.

Dahlkemper joined City yesterday, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal at The Academy Stadium. She becomes the third American to feature on the club’s books alongside Mewis and fellow midfielder Rose Lavelle.

The defender is regarded as one of Mewis’ best friends with the pair having previously played together in the United States with Pali Blues, Western New York Flash and North Carolina Courage. When speaking with FA Women’s Super League Full-Time this evening, Mewis admitted that she is excited to add Manchester City to that list.

“Abby and myself have been playing together since 2011” said Mewis. “Every year we have been on the same team.

“It is exciting to continue that partnership. She is obviously one of my best friends and I am very happy that she is going to be coming to Manchester.

“I think that she is an incredible defender, a great player, and I think she will fit right in.

“I know that she is really excited to get in, meet everybody and get started. I am really excited to have another American  coming and it will be fun.”

Manchester City have started the year without Mewis with the player having attended the United States camp rather than remain in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. Mewis went on to indicate that her international commitments had been agreed prior to moving to The Academy Stadium last summer.

“I think a lot of this was set up before we even signed” said Mewis. “I think that being at the national team camp was important, of course I wish that I could be playing in all of the Manchester City games too.

“It is a difficult thing to reconcile but this was important and was on the cards a while ago.”

Should she feature in both of the United States’ international fixtures against Colombia over the course of the next week, Mewis will collect her 70th senior cap for her country. She made her senior international debut in 2014 in the Algarve Cup and has featured heavily for The Stars and Stripes ever since. Mewis’ achievements for the United States throughout the last calendar year saw her crowned the 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the Year.

The United States play their first fixture against Colombia in Orlando, Florida at midnight on Tuesday before staging the second game against the same opponents at the same time on Saturday.
