Bristol City will meet Chelsea in this season’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup final after The Robins recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Leicester City at Twerton Park this evening.
On-loan Reading defender Kiera Skeels netted the only goal of the game in the second half as Matt Beard’s side booked their place in the final for the very first time.
A competitive first half produced few clear-cut goalscoring chances. The best opportunity fell to Bristol City forward Charlie Wellings who got a shot on target but visiting keeper Kirstie Levell was on top form to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
Leicester City attacker Paige Bailey-Gayle broke through early in the second period but she was denied by Sophie Baggaley who made an excellent save.
The decisive moment came a little under 20 minutes from time when a short corner was played to Ebony Salmon and she crossed for young defender Skeels to head the ball home.
The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser with Bailey-Gayle going closest after connecting with a free-kick delivery into the box but Bristol City rode the game out to claim their place in next month’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup final against red hot favourites Chelsea at Vicarage Road.
