Leicester City manager Jonathan Morgan believes that his side’s performance against Bristol City last night showed that they are able to compete with top tier sides.
The Foxes went down 1-0 to The Robins in the semi-finals of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup but they were a credit to themselves, dominating periods of the match.
Speaking in the post-match press conference in which FAWSL Full-Time were present, Morgan said that his side’s performance highlights the fact that they can turn it on against a side in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
“I think that we showed that we can compete with WSL teams” said Morgan. “Credit to Bristol for grinding out that game because I feel that we were on top of them for most of the second half.
“What came through tonight was their experience compared to a little bit of inexperience across the majority of our squad.
“The girls did us proud.”
Leicester City currently top the FA Women’s Championship table and the club are the favourites to win promotion to the top flight come the end of the season. Morgan went on to say that every Barclays FA Women’s Super League side has real quality and if his side do go up, they need to be prepared to take the game-changing chances.
He added “Even though the games go on for 90 minutes, they can be won in seconds. You saw that with Bristol tonight.
“It wasn’t a clear-cut chance but they were alert and aware enough to take their one half-chance. We created chances in the game but we were not as clinical.
“The attention to detail and to the smaller detail is massive in the WSL and obviously, that is something for us to work on between now and the end of the season.
“We’ve got a young squad. We’ve got experienced players like Remi Allen and Sophie Barker teaching the girls the right way but some of the girls have to focus on that side of their game now because as you see, natural talent isn’t enough in the WSL.”
Leicester City are next in action on Valentine’s Day when Morgan takes his side to Maiden Castle to face Durham in a top of the table clash in the FA Women’s Championship.
