London City Lionesses head coach Mel Phillips says that the club know that they can compete with the very best that the FA Women’s Championship has to offer.
The Pride go into this weekend’s meeting with Durham at Princes Park having won back-to-back league games while they haven’t conceded in their last five matches.
The Lionesses remain the only club to have beaten FA Women’s Championship leaders Leicester City so far this season while they defeated a very good Blackburn Rovers side 3-0 in their last home fixture. When speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time ahead of the match, head coach Phillips said that her side have what it takes to compete with the division’s top clubs.
“We know that we can compete at the top of the table and we are excited about our recent run of form and the opportunity to take that into the Durham game” said Phillips.
“They (Durham) are sitting in a close second right now and they’ve got just as much belief as we do in our identity so it is going to be an exciting test for both teams.
“Looking at that game last time around, it was a tight game, a close-fought 1-0 loss at their place but we are miles ahead now as a group than we were then.
“We know that it is a big one but we are just focusing on our performance.”
Despite their excellent recent form, London City Lionesses do not hold any remaining hopes of promotion this season, however, Phillips says that her side are aiming to perform to the very best of their ability between now and the end of the campaign.
She added “Our goal is to be competitive in every single game that we play to give us the best opportunity to win the game and to perform in a way that is going to lead to long-term success.
“Our goal is to finish as high in the table as possible and our goal is to be an incredibly difficult team to play against.
“Whether it be home or away, we want to be hard to break down but also have an attacking edge to our identity.
“It is an exciting opportunity because we still have three of the teams above us left to play. It is really exciting with the form that we are at right now and we just have to continue to challenge ourselves to grow so that we can push on in the table.”
London City Lionesses’ FA Women’s Championship fixture against Durham is scheduled to kick-off at midday on Sunday and will be available for fans to watch live on the FA Player.
