Keira Walsh’s 82nd-minute goal ensured that Manchester City recorded a 1-0 victory over a stubborn Everton side at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.
A game of few clear-cut chances saw City struggle to open up a well-drilled Everton back-line but Walsh finally struck the game’s only goal from the edge of the box to help the hosts continue their winning streak in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
It was a rather disjointed start at a chilly Academy Stadium with Manchester City having plenty of the ball in the Everton third but letting themselves down with the final touch. The visitors weren’t making it easy for City to play their football with their back-line proving to be very solid.
There were just two chances in a goalless first half and both fell to Sam Mewis. The first saw a Caroline Weir free-kick deflect into her path but she managed to miss the target with the goal at her mercy. Her second effort was a speculative one from distance which went wide of Sandy MacIver’s left post.
City found Everton every bit as difficult to break in the second half as quality chances remained at a premium. Walsh played Ellen White in on goal just after the hour but she fired wide before Lauren Hemp’s audacious overhead kick bounced just wide.
The game looked set to end goalless until the ball fell to City midfielder Walsh on the edge of the box eight minutes from time. She fired her shot low into the bottom corner of the net to hand her side the three points.
City’s attentions now turn to the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16 tie against Fiorentina in midweek while Everton travel to Birmingham City in their next match.
