Blackburn Rovers defender Ellie Stewart has made the decision to leave the club according to reports on Rovers’ official club website.
The 24-year-old centre-back has opted to leave the Sir Tom Finney Stadium for personal reasons.
Stewart was in her second spell with Rovers. In total, the player has made 50 appearances for the Lancashire club in all competitions in which she has scored 12 goals. Stewart made eight appearances for Rovers this season including six in the FA Women’s Championship. She was most recently in action for Gemma Donnelly’s side in the 3-0 defeat to London City Lionesses at Princes Park in January.
After starting out in the academy system at Everton, Stewart made the switch to Liverpool where she was a member of The Reds side which became champions of England. After finding playing opportunities difficult to come by at Liverpool, Stewart returned to former club Everton. In 2017, the player moved to Sunderland before joining Rovers the following year.
Stewart has overcome a real challenge to become a Rovers half-centurion. She battled back to fitness following an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in 2018/2019 to go on to become a regular member of the side in the club’s first season in the FA Women’s Championship.
After announcing her departure, Rovers have wished Stewart well ahead of the next step in her career.
