Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that he was not surprised to hear of Casey Stoney’s decision to step down at Manchester United.
The 39-year-old’s departure was confirmed on Thursday in a hectic week which has left the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with no less than four managerial vacancies.
Commenting on the situation at Manchester United in a Manchester City press conference, Taylor admitted that nothing comes to him as a surprise in football.
“Nothing surprises you in football,” Taylor said. “Seeing some of the other moves and speculation about coaches moving and players moving, this is football, this is kind of what happens.
“Casey has done just under three years at United and I think most situations when they happen like this are either that they have run their course or there’s an attractive offer elsewhere, There are many different things that determine it.
“While it was a relatively quiet period last summer for coaches moving around, especially in the WSL, you are always going to get this in most summers, player speculation, coaches leaving, new coaches coming in, it’s football.”
Taylor didn’t wish to speculate on who could take charge on the opposite side of the city next season.
He said “Who knows what their objectives are, it’s difficult to speculate when you’re not there and concentrating on your own thing.
“Like I said before, nothing surprises you in football so let’s see what happens.”
Taylor’s City have come up against Stoney’s United on three occasions this season. City took four points from The Red Devils in the league while the pair played out a goalless draw in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup before United won the resulting penalty shootout 4-3.
City finished the Barclays FA Women’s Super League season two places and eight points ahead of Stoney’s United side.
