Chelsea into the last eight of Women’s FA Cup after seeing off the threat of Everton

Chelsea are into the quarter-finals of this season’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup after defeating Everton 3-0 at Kingsmeadow this evening.

Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr and Drew Spence got the goals for The Blues as they bounced back from Sunday’s UEFA Women’s Champions League final defeat in Gothenburg.

Everton settled well at Kingsmeadow and Valerie Gauvin fired narrowly wide early on following a low pass from Hayley Raso. Claire Emslie then forced a sharp save from home keeper Ann-Katrin Berger before the German punched the loose ball to safety.

Chelsea soon got a foothold in the game with Beth England seeing a rasping long range effort crash off the post before Kerr teed up Reiten to open the scoring with a shot from inside the area which found the bottom corner of the net.

Emma Hayes’ side immediately pushed for a second goal with Reiten and Erin Cuthbert being denied in a goal-mouth scramble before England had a goal disallowed for offside.

Chelsea started the second half well with Millie Bright’s long range thunderbolt striking the crossbar before Kerr was denied by Everton keeper Sandy MacIver who came out big to block her shot.

MacIver soon came out on top again in a battle with Kerr before Berger was needed to push the ball to safety from an Everton free-kick which had deflected off Chelsea defender Jess Carter.

Chelsea doubled their lead with around 15 minutes left on the clock when Rikke Sevecke failed to deal with a long ball and Kerr stole in and rifled her shot into the roof of the net. The Australian international would have soon completed a brace if not for some brave defending by Gabby George.

The Blues wrapped up the victory late on with a deflected header by substitute Spence before England had another goal chalked off for offside at the death.

Chelsea now await details of their quarter-final opponents in next Friday’s draw.
