Former Aston Villa Sporting Director Eni Aluko has been appointed into a similar role at National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) expansion team Angel City.
The 34-year-old former England international forward left former club Villa last week after their Barclays FA Women’s Super League survival had been secured.
Aluko was linked with a move to the American National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) following her departure and it has today been confirmed by Angel City the she will become their first-ever Sporting Director.
Aluko was appointed into her former role at Villa in January 2020. She oversaw the club’s promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League while The Villains’ 10th-place finish in the top flight this season was enough to guarantee them another campaign at the top level.
The next step in Aluko’s career sees her return to America where she enjoyed three years as a player. The move to Angel City sees Aluko join a club who are less than a year old and are looking forward to their National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) debut in 2022.
Speaking to Angel City’s official club media sources following her appointment, Aluko said “This is an incredible opportunity to help write Angel City’s first chapter and to build a team that is people-focused and admired by players and fans all over the world.
“I have no doubt the club will be a trailblazer, not just in the NWSL and women’s soccer, but for sports clubs globally. As a former player, the club’s determination to make an impact both on the field and in the community is something that I fully support, and I can’t wait to get started.
“I am thrilled to join a fantastic female led ownership group, many of whom I have admired and been inspired by from a young age.”
In her new role, Aluko will have a say in a number of club matters including fixture management, recruitment and player and technical staff development while she will also act as the club’s NWSL liaison officer.
