Former Everton defender Van Es wins Eredivisie Vrouwen title with FC Twente

Former Everton defender Kika van Es is celebrating becoming an Eredivisie Vrouwen champion with current club FC Twente.

The Girls of Twente have secured their seventh league title with a 1-0 play-off victory over ADO Den Haag this afternoon. Anna-Lena Stolze’s 88th-minute goal was enough to hand Tommy Stroot’s side the three points.

The result left FC Twente four points clear at the top of the table with a game to go, meaning that they can no longer be caught by nearest challengers PSV Eindhoven. FC Twente beat both PSV and Ajax to top spot by a single point in the regular season before racing clear in their play-off group.

Former Everton defender Van Es played the full 90 minutes for Stroot’s side against ADO Den Haag. The 29-year-old has featured in 17 of FC Twente’s 19 Eredivisie Vrouwen games this season, helping her side to record eight clean sheets in the process. The defender joined the Dutch club in September after starting the 2020/2021 campaign with former side Everton. Van Es was named on the bench for Everton’s opening game of the season at Bristol City before she made the switch to the Sportpark Slangenbeek.

During her 14-month spell with The Blue Girls, Van Es made 10 appearances for the club in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
