Manchester United forward Christen Press was named the Player of the Match as the United States defeated Portugal 1-0 in the first game of the Summer Series this morning.
The 32-year-old played virtually the whole game for Vlatko Andonovski’s side and assisted former Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis for the winning goal. Press’ goal involvement was her 100th for the United States national team.
The game was played out in humid conditions in Houston, Texas as the United States prepared for their involvement in this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Press provided plenty of danger to the Portuguese goal with her crossing in the first half but the United States could not find the game’s opening goal. The player also went closest to finding the back of the net but her shot was well saved by Portuguese Inês Pereira.
Andonovski’s side threatened early in the second half through Alex Morgan and Mewis but neither player could muster a way of beating Pereira. In the end, the Portuguese keeper’s goal was finally breached when Press’ corner was directed home by the head of Mewis as the United States won 1-0.
Elsewhere in the Summer Series, Jamaica defeated Nigeria 1-0. They will now meet the United States in Houston, Texas in the early hours of Monday morning in their next match.
