Manchester United have completed the signing of defender Aoife Mannion following her departure from Manchester City according to reports on The Red Devils’ official website.
Mannion joined the blue half of Manchester from Birmingham City in 2019. During her time in the Second City, Mannion was selected in back-to-back PFA Teams of the Year between 2017 and 2019.
After sustaining a serious Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury, the centre-back struggled to find a place in the Manchester City side, particularly following the arrivals of Alex Greenwood and Abby Dahlkemper. As a result, Mannion was restricted to just seven appearances in a sky blue shirt over her two years with the club.
Mannion has today signed a two-year deal with Manchester United that will keep her with the club until the end of the 2022/2023 season.
After securing her move to The Leigh Sports Village, Mannion said “I’m delighted to be joining Manchester United. It’s a new chapter for me in my career and I’m just looking forward to working as hard as I can for this club.
“European football is obviously a big ambition here and would be the next step for the club, so to break into the Champions League with this team would be amazing.
“I’ve also heard lots about the fans and how passionate they are, and I can’t wait to hear them all in the stadium next season.”
The 25-year-old will now be trying to get her career back on track with The Red Devils who themselves confirmed today that defender Abbie McManus would be looking for pastures new following the expiration of her contract.
Although United still remain managerless, it is strongly believed that recently-departed Orlando Pride head coach Marc Skinner will soon be confirmed as the new boss at The Leigh Sports Village. Mannion worked under Skinner during his time at Birmingham City and her best years occurred under his tutelage. Therefore, a reunion could be hugely beneficial for all parties as United look to force their way into the top three this season.
