Manchester United have today secured their fifth signing of the summer transfer window with the arrival of Scotland international striker Martha Thomas according to reports on the club’s official website.
Thomas joins The Red Devils after leaving former club West Ham United at the end of last season and she will be donning the number nine shirt for her new club that was recently vacated following the departure of Jess Sigsworth to Leicester City.
The 25-year-old began her career in North Carolina with the intercollegiate team the Charlotte 49ers before moving to France to join Le Havre. Thomas then made the jump across the channel to join up with West Ham United and she is now swapping the claret and blue for the deep red of Manchester United.
Thomas follows Vilde Bøe Risa, Hannah Blundell, Sophie Baggaley and Aoife Mannion in making the switch to the Leigh Sports Village in what is proving to be a busy summer for The Red Devils.
Although the team are still without a manager, many expect former Orlando Pride boss Marc Skinner to be announced any day now. If that is the case, then one would expect that United’s transfer business won’t be done yet as Skinner will look to put his own stamp on the side.
The North West club narrowly missed out on a UEFA Women’s Champions League spot last campaign and with the departures of players such as Sigsworth, Amy Turner, and Lauren James, it will be a tall order for the club to challenge again. Still, fans will have faith that the new recruits will be able to propel the side into the top three and thus into Europe next season.
