Liverpool continue pre-season preparations with victory over Celtic

Liverpool have continued their preparations for the new FA Women’s Championship season with a hard-fought 3-2 pre-season friendly victory over 2020/2021 Scottish Women’s Premier League runners-up Celtic at the Solar Campus this afternoon.

Ashley Hodson, Melissa Lawley and Rianna Dean got the goals for The Reds as they followed up Sunday’s impressive 2-2 draw at Manchester United with a win.

Matt Beard’s side had to wait until five minutes before the half-time break to make their mark through Hodson who found the bottom corner of the Celtic net with her effort.

It was Celtic who came out the brighter of the two sides for the second half and they levelled matters in the 55th minute through summer signing Charlie Wellings. The former Birmingham City and Bristol City forward has been in exceptional goalscoring form since joining The Hoops.

Liverpool responded well to their opponents’ goal and they raced back into the lead with two goals in five minutes. First, winger Lawley found the back of the net before new signing Dean made her mark.

Centre-back Jodie Bartle reduced the arrears for Celtic when she headed home from a corner kick late on but Fran Alonso’s side couldn’t find a third goal as the hosts held on for the win.
