Former Lewes forward Rood joins Southampton

Former Lewes forward Katie Rood has completed a move to FA Women’s National League Southern Premier club Southampton according to reports on The Saints’ official website.

The 28-year-old spent two-and-a-half years at The Dripping Pan after making her loan move from Bristol City permanent in summer 2019. Rood left the Sussex club at the end of last season and therefore joins her latest club on a free transfer.

Rood scored two goals in 16 FA Women’s Championship outings last season as Lewes recorded their best-ever second tier finish of fifth place. The player was very much one for the big occasion with Rood having scored her two goals against promotion-chasing sides Liverpool and Durham. Rood’s biggest moment in a Lewes shirt came in the 2019/2020 FA Women’s Continental League Cup when she netted a stunning goal against a Chelsea side who would go on to become champions of England again that season.

After completing her move to Southampton, Rood said “I’m really excited about it, I think it’s an ambitious club. The resources and the facilities here are amazing.

“Even with the staff, they’re experienced and the quality, I think it shows the club are trying to make a statement. It really breeds a professional environment that us players thrive off.

“It’s an amazing environment. So far everyone has been really nice, really friendly but also really good.

“I’m excited to get out on the pitch with them and see what we can do.”

Rood was one of eight players to leave Lewes at the end of last season with manager Simon Parker opting to bring in some new faces to help push the club onto the next level.
