PREVIEW: Liverpool v London City Lionesses

The FA Women’s Championship makes a long-awaited return this afternoon when last season’s third-place side Liverpool welcome London City Lionesses to Prenton Park.

Both sides have been busy in the transfer window, with The Reds bringing in plenty of Barclays FA Women’s Super League talent such as Republic of Ireland international striker Leanne Kiernan and fellow forward Rianna Dean from Tottenham Hotspur.

Manager Matt Beard has also signed players who worked with him at former club Bristol City last season, where he was interim boss, in Yana Daniels, Jas Matthews and Carla Humphrey.

Katie Startup and Charlotte Wardlaw have joined the club on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea respectively, while England striker Rinsola Babajide has left Liverpool to join The Seagulls on loan.

London City Lionesses boss Melissa Phillips has also added top flight quality to her side with the additions of Rianna Jarrett, Jamie-Lee Napier and Anna Pedersen, as well as Charlotte Fleming who is formerly of newly-promoted Barclays FA Women’s Super League club Leicester City.

Amy Rodgers has also moved to Princes Park over the summer and she could make her debut against former club Liverpool this afternoon.

These two sides faced each other on the final day of last season with the aforementioned Rodgers scoring in a 2-2 draw at Prenton Park.

Liverpool’s objective is clear heading into this campaign, promotion is needed. With the talent added over the summer, as well as a top manager in Beard re-joining six years after he left the club, that is definitely achievable.

The game kicks-off at 2pm this afternoon and highlights will be made available on the FA Player.
