Birmingham City forward Lucy Quinn says that she is excited to make an immediate return to former club Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
The Blues have been paired with Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the opening day of the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season.
Summer signing Quinn spent two seasons at Spurs before leaving the club at the end of last season. She made 34 league appearances for Spurs in her two years with the club and scored three goals.
When speaking about her return to FAWSL Full-Time in a recent FAWSL media event, Quinn said that returning to Spurs on opening day was fate while she admitted that she is really excited by the prospect.
“That was one of the things that was always going to happen, we were going to get Spurs in our first game of the season;” Quinn said. “I had a really great time at Spurs, I learnt a lot both as a player and as a person, there is absolutely no bad blood with me and Spurs or anybody there.
“I am really excited to go back and see everyone and get the season started in a game that will be personally very enjoyable for me. I’ve also said to the girls here at Blues that this is exactly the kind of game that you want on the first day of the season, it’s an incredible stadium with a team that are still new to the league and are really pushing women’s football. I’ve just told them that we are going there to play a game of football and we want to leave with a result but also what an opener, what an occasion and what a great place to play.”
Tottenham Hotspur still hold the Barclays FA Women’s Super League’s attendance record with 38,262 fans having attended the North London derby against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November 2019, a game in which Quinn played. The attendance for this weekend’s match is likely to be much smaller, however, Quinn thinks that more fans may turn up than expected.
She added “It is always hard to tell (how big the crowd will be). Obviously, when I’ve played their previously when fans were allowed into the stadium it was the North London derby so we knew that there would be a good crowd. I don’t think that any of us could ever have estimated the number that showed up.
“It’s not a North London derby, there will be a difference in the crowd (this weekend) but I still think that we will be pleasantly surprised. It is a fantastic stadium and if you have got any young kids that want to see a game of football, people are going to come out and experience the day.
“Fans have not been permitted to be in stadiums for a long period of time and they are looking forward to the return of the WSL as much as we are and so I am hoping that there will be a good turnout. It might be difficult for a lot of Birmingham fans to be there on the day but everyone is just excited and I am hoping that a lot of neutral fans will be there, enjoying being back at a football game again.”
Birmingham City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
