Manchester United goalkeeper Hillyerd joins Charlton Athletic

Manchester United goalkeeper Sophie Hillyerd has joined FA Women’s Championship club Charlton Athletic on a permanent deal according to reports on The Addicks’ official website.

The 18-year-old England youth international keeper is highly-rated and is being tipped for a big future in the game. The player is still to make her senior footballing debut but she should provide some strong goalkeeping competition for first choice goalkeeper Eartha Cumings at new club Charlton Athletic.

Hillyerd was formerly with Bristol City and she was named on the bench for The Robins’ senior side for an FA Women’s Continental League Cup game back in 2019. The youngster made eight appearances for Bristol City in the 2019/2020 WSL Academy League before being fielded by Manchester United on three occasions in the same competition the following year.

After joining Charlton Athletic, Hillyerd said “I’m really excited, the environment here is great and it’s a big deal for me.

“I’m really proud of myself, I’ve worked so hard. To sign it (first professional contract) at Charlton is really exciting just because of the environment and the players, it’s really good to be in and around the first team.

“It really does feel like a family, people say clubs are supposed to feel like a family but this really is, all the girls are so supportive.”

Hillyerd could be involved in the Charlton Athletic squad on Sunday when Coventry United are the visitors to The Oakwood.
