Everton and Manchester City get their respective seasons underway this afternoon when the pair meet in-front of a sizeable crowd at Goodison Park.
Willie Kirk’s Blue Girls will very much be aiming to put down an early marker in the race for European qualification while Manchester City will hope to avoid giving away any ground in the title race on the opening day.
Ahead of the big kick-off, FAWSL Full-Time have been taking a look at the statistics surrounding the game, provided to us by Opta. Here are four facts which relate to previous meetings between Everton and Manchester City.
Everton don’t like playing Manchester City
Everton’s meetings with Manchester City are the most one-sided fixtures in Barclays FA Women’s Super League history with Manchester City winning all 10 matches between the two sides in the competition by an aggregate scoreline of 26-4. Last season’s contests saw The Cityzens win 3-0 at Walton Hall Park before Gareth Taylor’s side followed that victory up with a 1-0 home success in March.
Toni Duggan – A legend of both clubs
Forward Toni Duggan has returned to Everton over the summer, her first side, after spells with Manchester City, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Duggan has 36 Barclays FA Women’s Super League goals to her name, currently sitting in 11th place in the competition’s all-time top scorers list. Duggan’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League goals are split between Everton and City with 17 goals for her current club and 19 goals for her former side.
Manchester City need to be cautious of former star Christiansen
Everton’s Izzy Christiansen, formerly of Manchester City, was their joint-top scorer with six goals and top assister with six assists in the 2020/2021 Barclays FA Women’s Super League. The midfielder has only failed to either score or assist against two of the 17 teams that she has faced in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, one of which is Manchester City. She will be looking to cause plenty of problems for her former club this afternoon.
Everton don’t do well when conceding first
Everton have only won one of their last 54 Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches when they’ve conceded the first goal (D5 L48), a 3-2 win over Reading in April 2019. Manchester City have scored first in 12 of their last 13 matches in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, a good omen for Gareth Taylor’s side. Since losing 2-1 to Chelsea in December 2019, Manchester City have also lost none of their last 25 Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches when they’ve taken the lead (W23 D2), winning 17 of 18 such matches last season (D1).
The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Everton and Manchester City at Goodison Park kicks-off at 1.30pm and will be broadcast live on BBC One. Tickets will be on sale right up until kick-off.
