Midfielder Weir capable of elevating her game to another level says Manchester City boss Taylor

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that midfielder Caroline Weir is capable of taking her game to another level.

The 26-year-old has been a regular good performer in all competitions for Manchester City since joining the club in 2018 while she has consistently played 25-30 game seasons for The Cityzens.

Weir netted Manchester City’s goal in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 2 tie against Real Madrid in Spain last week as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of the second leg, head coach Taylor said that the midfielder is capable of being an even better player in the future.

“She’s a top player;” Taylor told FAWSL Full-Time. “I was excited to work with Caroline because I could see that there were real gains to be made. It took us a while, in terms of that trusting relationship between us and I promised her that if she bought into this she would score more goals, provide more assists, she would play better.

“Fair play to her, she has really taken the bull by the horns and kind of November/December onwards, she was a permanent fixture in the team and that was a difficult midfield to get into with the quality that we had.

“The next step for her is to really push on and really nail down the small details that are going to elevate her game to an even higher level, she is certainly capable of doing that.

“I thought her performance on Saturday was very, very good against Everton.”

Taylor will be hoping that Weir can again make a significant contribution against Real Madrid in the second leg. When commenting on the game, the Manchester City boss said that he believes that his side are in a better place going into the tie.

“It’s very even, obviously with the away goals rule being dropped now, it’s completely even;” Taylor said. “We pulled out the toughest tie that we could have done, we are aware of that, we are aware of them as a team.

“We had a good result at the weekend and that is another game under our belts, some good momentum achieved on Saturday so I think that we will be in a better place when we start the game tomorrow night.”

Manchester City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 2 second leg tie against Real Madrid kicks-off at 7pm on Wednesday evening. Tickets for the match remain on sale and can be purchased by clicking here. The game is also being shown live on City+.
