New England head coach Sarina Wiegman has named her first squad for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying matches later this month.
The Lionesses’ qualifying campaign begins against North Macedonia at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on Friday 17 September before they play Luxembourg at the State de Luxembourg on Tuesday 21 September.
Wiegman’s 25-player squad was announced this evening via an official press release from The Football Association and includes 16 members of the Team GB football team who reached the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games this summer.
Youngsters Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Lauren Hemp, Sandy MacIver, Esme Morgan, Ebony Salmon, Ella Toone and Lotte Wubben-Moy have all been handed places in Wiegman’s squad.
Manchester City trio Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh and Ellie Roebuck all miss out with injuries while Manchester United pair Mary Earps and Lucy Staniforth make their returns to the squad after being absent from recent international camps.
Commenting on her selection, England head coach Wiegman said “I’m extremely excited to get started. Our coaching team and scouts have done a tremendous job ensuring me and Arjan Veurink (Assistant Coach) are fully prepared.
“Whilst we have a few injuries to key players to contend with, we have such a strong squad and I’m excited by the young talent we have called up for this camp.”
England begin their preparations for the North Macedonia fixture on Monday. The game marks the first time in two years that fans can watch the Lionesses live and tickets can be purchased by clicking here. The full squad list is below.
