Manchester United return to winning ways with victory at Birmingham City

Manchester United have returned to winning ways in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with a 2-0 victory over Birmingham City at St Andrew’s this evening.

Leah Galton and Ella Toone got the goals for Marc Skinner’s side as the Manchester United boss celebrated a winning return to his former club.

Manchester United pushed forward from the first whistle but they struggled to get beyond a well-drilled and committed Birmingham City defence in the early stages of the game.

The first chance went the way of the hosts with a flowing attacking move resulting in the ball falling at the feet of Lucy Quinn but the Republic of Ireland international could only slice her shot wide.

Manchester United netted the game’s opening goal just before the half-hour mark with the first meaningful opportunity. Hannah Blundell drove into the box and teed up Galton to place the ball beyond Emily Ramsey and into the Birmingham City net.

The Red Devils created more in the second period, although the final touch often evaded them. Galton fired an effort just wide shortly after the restart before Birmingham City caused the visitors a few problems at the other end with Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps being called upon on a couple of occasions.

Jackie Groenen then saw a dangerous shot go narrowly off target before Blundell wasted a great chance when given a clear sight of goal. Alessia Russo was next to spurn an opportunity before Ella Toone saw a cheeky chip come back off the woodwork.

Manchester United finally scored their second goal 10 minutes from time through Toone. Blundell was again the provider as the England international forward was gifted a tap in.

Toone had an opportunity to make it 3-0 soon after her goal but she was denied by Ramsey as Manchester United had to be content with a two-goal victory.

The Red Devils end the weekend in fourth position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table with nine points from four games. Birmingham City are in 11th and are still searching for their first points under new head coach Scott Booth, although they are showing signs of improvement.
