Liverpool claim victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in-front of record crowd

Liverpool have recorded another away victory in the FA Women’s Championship with The Reds defeating Sheffield United 2-0 at Bramall Lane this afternoon.

Charlotte Wardlaw and Leanne Kiernan got the goals for Matt Beard’s side as they chalked up a third away day success of the season in-front of 4,100 fans in S2.

Liverpool should have been ahead inside two minutes but Jas Matthews headed over after being left completely unmarked following a free-kick.

That miss would act as a warning for the hosts with Liverpool taking the lead from their next meaningful attack. Youngster Wardlaw edged towards the Sheffield United box and she kept her composure to guide a superb shot over home keeper Fran Kitching and into the net.

Lucy Watson was a bright spark at the other end of the pitch for Sheffield United and she went close just before the half-hour mark before Liverpool gave themselves a scare when Rachael Laws directed a clearance straight at Courtney Sweetman-Kirk but the ball luckily went wide.

Matt Beard’s side doubled their lead soon after with Kiernan heading home after getting on the end of a dangerous cross from the right.

It could have been even better for The Reds just before the break but Kitching blocked an effort from Taylor Hinds before Kiernan couldn’t get clear contact on the rebound.

The second half contained plenty of effort but little in the way of quality goalscoring opportunities. Kiernan headed over when in a good position to score but other than that chance, Liverpool were largely restricted to efforts from distance, none of which really troubled Kitching in the Sheffield United goal.

Sheffield United’s best chance fell to forward Sweetman-Kirk. She drove a powerful shot against the angle of the goal, however, she was deemed to be in an offside position.

With Sheffield United chasing a way back into the match, Liverpool substitute Missy Bo Kearns found herself one-on-one with Kitching in second half injury time but she scuffed a shot wide across goal as the game ended 2-0.

The victory sees Liverpool leapfrog Sheffield United in the FA Women’s Championship table. The Reds have moved top ahead of the remainder of the weekend’s fixtures tomorrow.
