England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that she is excited to work with Aston Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton in the upcoming camp.
The 20-year-old keeper has received a recall to the Lionesses squad for this month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Latvia. Hampton will compete for the number one jersey alongside Manchester United’s Mary Earps and Everton’s Sandy MacIver.
When speaking after her latest squad was announced, England boss Wiegman said that she is excited to work with Hampton for the first time.
“She is very athletic, she’s a very natural goalkeeper,” Wiegman said. “I am really excited to bring her in and start working with her and see how she relates to the other goalkeepers and with the whole squad.
“She is a young keeper, it is her first time working with me since I came here and I am just really looking forward to seeing the three goalkeepers that are in.
“We have really good goalkeepers in England, that is a luxury.”
England’s upcoming fixture against Northern Ireland will be the first competitive women’s international match to be staged at Wembley Stadium. Wiegman went on to say that the occasion is one which really excites her.
She said “It is very, very special to play at Wembley. I am very excited but also calm because we play another match (against Latvia).
“We just want to really play well, get a good win and hopefully, the people who come and watch us or watch on TV have a really nice evening and enjoy themselves and we will be happy.
“It is just a special occasion because we are playing at Wembley and it is also the first competitive game to be played there in history so it is lots of things, it is special.”
England take on Northern Ireland at Wembley on Saturday 23 October before travelling to Riga to face Latvia on Tuesday 26 October.
