England forward Ella Toone says that she always believed that a hat-trick was possible against Latvia.
The Manchester United star netted a treble in a 10-0 victory for the Lionesses in Riga last night. It was her first hat-trick for her country at senior level.
Toone scored two of her goals inside the first 15 minutes at the Daugava Stadium but she had to wait until the 68th minute to get her third. When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, the player said that after scoring twice early in the game, she always felt that the hat-trick was on.
“Yeah I did given the amount of chances that I had after the second one,” Toone said when asked whether she thought that she would complete her hat-trick.
“I thought that maybe two is enough but I kept trying, kept getting in the areas and managed to finally put the last one away. I’m delighted.”
Toone’s hat-trick came in just her sixth senior international appearance and the player admitted that the occasion came earlier than she ever thought.
She said “No I didn’t (think I would score a hat-trick after six games) and I am delighted that I managed to get the hat-trick tonight. More importantly, we got the three points which was the main thing that we set out to do.
“For me, it has been a special night and a very proud moment for me and my family.”
Toone now has five goals in six senior internationals. Four of her goals have come in England’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaign.
