Manchester City and Chelsea will hope to take another step towards lifting the Vitality Women’s FA Cup this afternoon when the pair meet at The Academy Stadium in the semi-finals.
The trophy has been won by one of these two clubs in each of the last four seasons and one side will have a chance to continue this statistic at Wembley in December.
Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the statistics surrounding the fixture. Here are four facts which relate to the Vitality Women’s FA Cup semi-final tie between Manchester City and Chelsea.
The two sides are yet to contest a cup final
Despite being regular semi-final opponents, Manchester City and Chelsea are yet to face each other in a final. The last six Vitality Women’s FA Cup finals and the last five FA Women’s Continental League Cup finals have included Manchester City or Chelsea but never both sides. The only time that the two clubs have contested silverware was in the 2020 Women’s FA Community Shield when Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert scored in a 2-0 win for Chelsea at Wembley.
Chelsea have the better record in Vitality Women’s FA Cup head-to-heads
The two sides have met on five occasions in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup with Chelsea winning three ties outright and one in extra-time. Manchester City did win the latest meeting in 2019 when Chelsea defender Magda Eriksson netted a cruel own goal in second half injury time.
Ji and Kirby have been regular sources of Vitality Women’s FA Cup goals
All of Chelsea’s last five Vitality Women’s FA Cup goals against Manchester City have been scored by either Ji So-yun or Fran Kirby. Ji has two goals while the last three goals have come from teammate Kirby. Given Kirby’s impressive attacking statistics this season, you wouldn’t rule out her adding to her record against Manchester City while Ji is always capable of a goal from midfield.
Chelsea hold the superior record in Barclays FA Women’s Super League meetings
Chelsea are unbeaten in eight Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches against Manchester City, their last defeat against The Cityzens coming in the 2017 FA Women’s Super League 1 Spring Series when Nick Cushing’s side won 1-0 at The Academy Stadium. Chelsea’s eight-game unbeaten run against Manchester City in league competition includes six draws with all four games at The Academy Stadium being score draws.
The Vitality Women’s FA Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Chelsea kicks-off at 12.45pm this afternoon and will be broadcast live on BBC One. Tickets for the match can be purchased by clicking here.
