‘The next game is never the same as the last’ – Everton boss Vasseur previews Brighton

Everton manager Jean-Luc Vasseur says that he is not taking too much from Brighton & Hove Albion’s recent defeat to Arsenal in the semi-finals of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.

The Seagulls lost 3-0 to The Gunners at Meadow Park last weekend with new Everton boss Vasseur having watched back a video of that match in preparation of the two sides’ meeting at Walton Hall Park this weekend.

Brighton & Hove Albion arrive on Merseyside having made a good start in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League but Everton boss Vasseur says that he is not taking too much notice of past records, both good and bad, it is what happens on the day what matters for him.

“The next game is close so we don’t have a lot of time to prepare for Brighton,” Vasseur said when speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in his pre-match press conference. “I’ve watched their videos but the next game is never the same as the last.

“We need to stay vigilant and prepare the team in the best way so maybe look at changing the system or the players.

“On Wednesday, I wanted to see more players on the pitch so I made five substitutions. It was important to see the players so I was satisfied with using the 16 players. It gives me some understanding of the different ways to organise my future team and my future system.”

Vasseur took charge of Everton for the first time as they recorded their 3-1 victory over Leicester City at The Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday. French international forward Valerie Gauvin netted her first goal of what has been a slightly frustrating season so far for her personally and her manager believes that she will take confidence from her strike.

He said “Yes, the goal was good for Valerie but for the team too. Izzy Christiansen scored and had a very good game so there are a lot of players who impressed in the first game. It gives us a good benchmark to work on and to improve for the future.

“We await Brighton and we will look to deliver another winning performance.”

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 5.30pm on Saturday evening. Tickets are available to purchase here.
