Arsenal defender Williamson suffers ‘significant’ hamstring injury

Arsenal have today confirmed that defender Leah Williamson has suffered a significant hamstring injury.

The 24-year-old Milton Keynes-born centre-back played the full 90 minutes for The Gunners in their 1-1 North London derby draw at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday but it is understood that she felt some discomfort after the game.

An assessment of Williamson’s injury has now been completed by the Arsenal medical team and it has been determined that the player has sustained a significant hamstring injury.

The recovery time for hamstring injuries is generally anything between one and three months meaning that Williamson could be out for some time. She will miss this week’s fixtures against HB Køge and Manchester United while England head coach Sarina Wiegman will need to appoint a new captain for the nation’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against Austria and Latvia later this month. It also seems likely that Williamson will miss the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 5 December.

Prior to her injury, Williamson had enjoyed a fine start to the season for club and country. Her form has been a contributing factor to Arsenal’s flying start under new boss Jonas Eidevall while she has impressed as England captain in the absence of some other key players.

A full rehabilitation plan for Williamson is set to be determined by Arsenal in the coming days.
