‘It was a disastrous second half’ – Aston Villa boss Ward deflated after five-goal defeat

Aston Villa head coach Carla Ward vented her frustration at her side’s second half performance as The Villans slipped to a 5-0 defeat at Manchester City this afternoon.

Ward’s side held their own in a goalless first half but matters took a significant turn early in the second half with Aston Villa conceding twice in seven minutes. The hosts went on to score three further goals as Aston Villa became the first team this season to drop points at The Academy Stadium.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Aston Villa head coach Ward said that she was far from pleased with her side’s second half showing.

“It was a disastrous second half if I’m honest,” Ward said. “We come in at half-time and we are happy with the first half and the game plan but five minutes into the second half, we find ourselves 2-0 down then we have to change the formation to try to step up and put pressure on their back-line. By doing that, it has then opened up spaces and ultimately, it has hurt us.

“Yeah, I’m really, really frustrated.”

After doing so well in the first half to contain Manchester City and restrict them to very few chances, the second half performance felt like a real kick in the teeth for Ward.

She said “It has just not worked out today. I’ll be honest, I might reflect and look at it differently in a few hours but right now it’s probably the worst feeling since I was a manager.”

Aston Villa now go into a two-week break before their next match against Sunderland in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.
