Manchester City v Aston Villa – Stat Attack

Manchester City will be aiming to finally get some points on the board on home soil when they take on Aston Villa at The Academy Stadium at lunchtime.

The Cityzens have lost three out of three at the City Football Academy in this season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League and that record must change sooner rather than later.

Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the statistics surrounding the fixture provided by Opta. Here are four facts which relate to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting between Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Manchester City were easy winners against Aston Villa last season

Manchester City have won both of their Barclays FA Women’s Super League matches against Aston Villa last season, chalking up an aggregate score of 9-0. The Cityzens cruised to a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on opening day, capitalising on two mistakes, before defeating The Villans 7-0 on home soil back in January. Both sides are in very different form going into the latest meeting this lunchtime.

Aston Villa can capitalise on Manchester City’s defensive woes

Manchester City have conceded 16 goals in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this season, that’s three more than they conceded in 22 matches last term (13). Some of those goals have come from either goalkeeping or defensive errors and this is something which opponents Aston Villa can look to capitalise on themselves.

Aston Villa aiming to create new top flight history

Following a 1-0 Second City derby victory over Birmingham City last time out, Aston Villa are looking to secure back-to-back wins in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League for the first time. It was a trademark victory for Carla Ward’s side at St Andrew’s six days’ ago, The Villans displayed grit and determination to overcome their rivals thanks to an Anita Asante goal.

Manchester City goalkeeper Taieb is low on confidence

Whilst it is never nice to see a player suffering from a lack of confidence, Manchester City goalkeeper Karima Benameur Taieb is going through a tough time at the minute. The French stopper has played her part in some of the sloppy goals conceded by her side in recent weeks and Aston Villa could do worse that adopt a ‘shoot on sight’ policy and try their luck. Taieb has saved just 14 of the 30 shots on target that she’s faced in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League (47%), a sign of the difficult situation that she finds herself in at the moment.
